It gets everyone outside and everything is popping. Meanwhile, in a side room at the Hay Barn, people stopped to look at the unusual and strikingly beautiful bonsais that the Long Island Bonsai Society brought along. There were more educational opportunities inside the main area of the Hay Barn.
Suzanne Kreuz, from the U. Department of Agriculture, was speaking to people about the Asian longhorned beetle, which is infesting many trees in New York City and Suffolk County. Unfortunately, any tree with this beetle will have to come down. Children were able to have their faces painted, climb trees and laugh at the Mutts Gone Nuts Variety Show. Representatives from the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and the Audubon Center were there with a corn snake and some turtles, and members of Cornell Cooperative were available to offer advice on how to plant the seedlings people were taking home.
The Arbor Day Family Festival was good old-fashioned fun. And it was a great way to celebrate trees, appreciate what they do to enhance our lives and take a moment to look around and marvel at just how much they beautify Oyster Bay.

Lawn care operators in Long Island, New York, constantly battle weeds like wild violet, curly dock, oxalis, plantain and ground ivy, which grow rampant in the Northeast. Rich Mailander, owner of Lawn Patrol of Long Island, researched a variety of products, and kept running into the same problem. He first used Turflon Ester Ultra on an acre estate covered in violet, red woodsorrel, plantain and ground ivy. We saw great control through the winter and into the spring. He treated the same property again the following fall and summer, and there were no signs of violet, ground ivy or woodsorrel. Since then, he started adding carfentrazone to help the Turflon Ester Ultra move through the plants faster. It also helps with dandelion and chickweed control.
