I was testing out the baby for the first time (today in fact) when I went on a ride and realized that the baby had outgrown all of the equipment I had worn over the years. A long time ago when I first bought the baby, I bought a Merrell since I was lucky enough to have a job that paid for new gear. At the time I was probably the largest guy at work and I needed something that I could fit into my gym bag. Later on when I wanted to switch to something more practical I picked up some Keen sandals, and I knew they would work because they came in at the right size for my feet. As my feet grew I started swapping out the sandals for slippers in winter and hiking shoes in the summer. Eventually I swapped them out for work shoes and thought they were pretty cool. As the baby grew I found myself switching from the Keen sandals to the Merrell boots, then to clogs, and lastly to brogues. The Brogues are great because they keep your feet warm and dry even if it’s pouring rain or snow. Now I can’t find shoes with a platform to save my life, so all I had left was the Merrells.

That brings me to the situation today. When I took the bike out to ride the baby, my feet were too big for the Merrells and so I had to find a different pair of shoes. After a bit of searching I realized the Merrells are probably good for just a couple of years since they last had a major redesign in 2006. My shoes were making my feet hurt, so I needed a pair that would support me more so I could get some peace. I picked up a pair of Brooks Brothers to replace the Merrells. However, these are not cheap $100-$300 Brooks Brothers that I bought a long time ago. These are $450 Brooks Brothers that had new soles put on last year. I just need to figure out a way to let them stretch out a little bit. This should give me about a year or two before they need to be replaced.

What’s the lesson in all of this? Spend a little money on quality and you won’t be disappointed.

Since my back wasn’t in a good place after I hurt it this last winter I thought I would give cycling a try again. My first two rides were on the trainer, so I think I am starting off pretty well. I am a fan of the trainer because I love riding indoors and I am ready to get outside, even if it’s raining.

At first I was only planning on riding once a week, which is too much. I then came to the realization that I should be riding at least 3 times a week because I was running out of time. The idea of spending all of that time cycling in a gym was really unattractive to me, and more importantly it’s not going to happen. The third day was the first ride outside of the trainer. I ran a 10k in the rain. It was cold and it was raining. As I said earlier, I knew that I had to get outside, but I also knew that I couldn’t continue riding if it got too bad. I am going to be riding in the rain for the next 3-6 months, and this is going to be a problem. The good thing about running a 10k is that it is only a 4 mile ride, but then I still have to ride back to my apartment to shower and change. With this in mind I will be riding 2 days a week and going back and forth between the trainer and the road, and that will mean lots of hours on the trainer.

I should probably mention that I’m not a member of a gym and my apartment does not have a bike rack. The downside to this is that I have to walk about 1.3 miles to get to the closest gym. Luckily, I like to walk in the rain, but if it was raining on my ride home then I would be cold, wet, and walking the bike to my apartment would not be an option. I will either have to ride home more often or walk more often, but the bottom line is that I am not going to be in a hurry to stop.

The good thing about this is that it will push me to improve my bike handling. I can’t take care of my bike when it is wet, so I am going to be focusing on my technique. This may not be something that is attainable right now, but I am in it for the long haul.

I’ve noticed that a lot of people when they go outside for the first time after a while and the weather is warm, they need to wear a hat. I know that when I first started, I only wore a cap to keep my head warm, but today I found out about the sunnies. You wear sunnies when it’s very sunny outside. I’m going to look into this, because now I think I need to wear a hat too.

I was visiting a friend who has a house in Northern California where there are lots of people who live in the San Francisco Bay area. I found myself taking quite a few photographs of cyclists, and there were some pretty interesting sights. First of all, I noticed that there are more cyclists in the Bay Area than I realized, and then I noticed that the majority of the cyclists were riding fast. I have lived in the Bay Area for 3 years and I have never seen so many fast cyclists, and I have seen a lot of cyclists. I noticed that their bicycles were fast too. I didn’t realize how fast the bikes were until I started to take photos, and I started to get a little bit scared that I might be able to catch up with them if I kept trying. Fortunately, I took a lot of pictures of the cyclists before they got out of sight, so I knew that I didn’t need to run to keep up.

It’s been awhile
