What are indoor plants?
Indoor plants provide a ‘lawn effect’, growing low to the ground and spilling over into the floor, this design serves several functions. Firstly it helps with watering and with air circulation. Plants can be grown in shallow pots so they have a constant supply of water. Secondly they provide a natural and pleasant and hospitable ambiance. They also are attractive to birds, insects and snails who will use them as a place to make a home. Indoor plants can also be used as an introduction to the outdoors. Just think of a large evergreen plant, perhaps an olive tree.
What about smaller indoor plants?
Think of growing seedlings in a shallow pot. Take them out into the garden when they are ready to be planted. Often they may come in tiny seedling packages where the plant comes with pot and all you need is water. When it’s time to plant the seedling use a cup or watering can to water them in place. I have a seedling growing in a small cup and I let it stay there until it’s strong enough to go outside.
Can indoor plants live outside in a greenhouse?
Yes, but they are usually kept inside because you don’t want to water them in the summer. In the winter it’s not quite the same, they have to have access to winter sun. A lot of indoor plants will need more sunshine and less water in the winter than they do in the summer. However, there are several cool climate plants that will survive in a greenhouse or porch. Sometimes, especially in the deep south, the heating system in a greenhouse can be inadequate and the plants will overheat. However, you can choose which plants to put in the greenhouse or porch.
Do indoor plants have to be potted?
Yes, all indoor plants should be in a pot or some kind of medium so that they can grow easily and are easily placed. They can also be planted directly into the soil. If you choose to do this then put some of the potting medium in a container of water and some in your basket or pot. They can then be planted so the top inch or two is in water.
Indoor plants make beautiful arrangements. They are often used to decorate Christmas trees, be used in a living room, bedroom or patio or placed in a planter in the garden or conservatory. Plants can also be used to decorate the outside of the house too, such as a floral wreath, or pots on the front or side of a house. You can also use plants to show off in the classroom, living room or office. Look for inexpensive plants, but that won’t look cheap!
Plants can be quite healthy to eat. They can be used to create salads or smoothies, fresh green juices or juice blends or soups. You can also put a pinch or a bit of the plant in water, juice or cooked vegetables or fruit.
If you are a plant fancier, think about where you want to get your plants. Local nurseries will often have a good selection, but you may need to drive to a large metropolitan area for some of your plants. Other sources include the mail order services, local flower shops, home improvement stores, and some yard stores. You may also be able to find some plants at a discount gardening center.
There are many different types of plants, and there is a wide range of costs for your plants. You will be surprised at how much less expensive your plants will be if you buy plants from a home improvement store rather than a florist or nursery. Don’t buy plants that need to be planted in a greenhouse, they will have a lower cost.
Keep your plants clean so that you don’t get problems with them. Soil is like any other surface, it attracts molds and pests that can damage plants. Also, if you have pets or children, keep the plants clean. Some indoor plants are epiphytic, meaning they like to grow near the ceiling and these plants need to be cleaned out frequently.
Also, indoor plants should be regularly watered, especially if they are outside. Pots should be placed on a heat mat. Take care when you water them in the summer. If you use cold water, they may start to wilt. If you use a hose to water them, make sure the hose nozzle is not so strong that it’s causing the pot to droop. If you use a watering can, it should be not so hard that it makes the pot bend. They will also need some water once a week, but they should not sit in water for too long.
Where can you get free plants?
There are plenty of opportunities to get free plants. Many big chain stores, such as Home Depot and Lowe’s, sell plants and they often have good plants. If you do some research online, you may be able to get plants for free too. Most gardening centers also offer a buy-one-get-one-free promotion so you can double your plants.
What should I be aware of with indoor plants?
Be aware that some indoor plants can be toxic. You should only use plants that you know are healthy. Once in a while a plant may die or not live. If this happens, just replace it. Once you have started some of your indoor plants, you may want to do some experimenting with various plants so that you get a good selection. The plants that are available to you are all healthy and growing well. If you find that one plant has a lower-than-average yield, it may need to be replaced.
Frogs and toads love plants. They will use the plants as their home and often the plants will happily tolerate their company. However, because the frogs and toads are pests, it is a good idea to place them outside at night, or in a corner of the room. Some types of plants are great for food, but they are
