Only timely pruning of strawberry bushes will allow it to gain strength for fruiting. Such an event will not weaken the bush, but, on the contrary, will make it stronger and healthier.
There is still no consensus on whether to trim strawberries or not. Very often, due to the summer-autumn hassle, strawberries remain unkempt, in the winter they go with all the leaves and mustaches and in the spring they give a wonderful harvest. Other gardeners cut the bushes completely, new greens grow by winter, and strawberries also bloom and bear fruit beautifully in spring. So who's right?
Let's look at the positive and negative aspects of completely pruning strawberries.
If your plantation consists of several beds, then it is best not to remove all leaves without exception, but to choose only old, diseased ones. When there is no need to increase the plantation, it is better to remove mustache with rosettes immediately.
If you do not remove the mustache, then the strawberry bed will quickly overgrow.
Strawberries require constant grooming. In the spring, they carry out sanitary pruning of bushes after wintering. During the fruiting period, the excess mustache is cut off, and after harvesting, a healing pruning is carried out, cutting off the leaves in whole or in part, in addition, you can cut off the reddened or diseased leaves in the fall.
On our very first visit to the dacha in early spring, we inspect the strawberries. If there is no snow anymore, then you can do sanitary pruning: remove withered, damaged and red leaves. It is best to collect them by hand or use a fan rake, as the root system of strawberries is shallow, gentle and a regular rake can damage it. Immediately after such pruning, you need to feed the strawberries: pour 5-7 HB-101 granules under each bush and sprinkle with a bio-cocktail. This will help the strawberries wake up and start growing.
Bio-cocktail recipe: for 1 liter of water we take 2 granules of the Healthy Garden preparation + 2 Ecoberin granules (homeopathy for plants) and 2 drops of liquid HB 101 (immunostimulant).
This is how strawberries come out after winter: you need to remove all dry and damaged leaves, since pests can hide under them
After a week, you can fertilize with liquid organic or mineral fertilizers. For example, use liquid biohumus Gumistar in accordance with the instructions. After warming up the soil, pour compost, vermicompost or granulated horse manure into the aisles or under each bush separately - this will serve as food for the strawberries at the time of forcing the peduncles. It is very helpful to cover the soil with straw to prevent it from drying out quickly.
Immediately after harvest, when the last berry is removed from the bush, you need to prune the old leaves. Cut off damaged and diseased leaves with pruning shears or garden scissors, remove the whiskers if you do not need propagation outlets. 5-7 young leaves in the center should remain on the bush. Directly pour and feed the strawberries with organic or mineral fertilizers. By winter, a lush and strong bush will grow.
After harvesting, you need to cut off the old leaves, leaving 5-7 young leaves in the center
Very often you can see the following picture: in mid-August, all the leaves are cut off, leaving stumps, while planting young rosettes in a new place. Unfortunately, making a complete pruning of the bush later than mid-July, you simply deprive yourself of part of the harvest, since flower buds are laid in August for the coming spring. When you completely cut the leaves of the strawberry, the plant is stressed, the normal movement of the juice from the roots to the foliage stops. Then the strawberry, instead of laying the future harvest, spends energy on growing new leaves. That is why it is recommended to harvest foliage immediately after harvest, and not when replanting bushes in August.
Such pruning in late summer or autumn will greatly weaken the plant.
Autumn pruning (September-October) can be done selectively by removing reddened or diseased leaves or bushes.
Some strawberry varieties form many whiskers during the growing season, from which rosettes of young plants develop later. If you do not remove them in time, then the bed will overgrow very quickly. Instead of pouring berries, strawberries will grow young bushes, so it is advisable to remove the antennae immediately after they appear, while they are still thin and fragile.
It is better to cut off the mustache of strawberries right away so that the plant does not waste energy on growing outlets
But most often the mustache is removed already when the bush is completely pruned, after collecting all the berries.
If you need rosettes to increase the plantation, then even during the fruiting period, mark those bushes where there were the most berries. In the future, take a mustache from this bush, even if the rosettes are not the most beautiful.
Now there are more and more varieties of remontant strawberries, the berries of which are distinguished by excellent taste and size. Each bush can grow up to 50 cm wide and grow up to a kilogram of delicious berries in one season. Such fruiting is possible only with proper care and constant feeding. Therefore, traditional pruning for remontant shrubs is not done, since the formation of flower stalks and ripening of berries occurs throughout the season, and complete pruning of the leaves will weaken the plant.
Repaired strawberries bloom and bear fruit all summer, so they are pruned selectively
Periodically trim off diseased, dry and damaged leaves, as well as whiskers if you do not need them for reproduction.
Since remontant strawberries are very intensive in growth and fruiting, new bushes are planted every 2–3 years, in contrast to ordinary strawberries, which are transplanted every 4–5 years.
Strawberry pruning is an important measure for maintaining the health of the plantation and setting up future crops. But only pruning carried out on time will allow not to deplete the bushes, but to make them healthier and stronger.
Hello, my name is Irina, I am 33 years old. I love my collection of hippeastrum very much, but I do not offend other flowers either.

Probably, you will not find such a gardener who would not grow strawberries in his garden. After all, both children and adults love her. Fragrant juicy berries are not only tasty, but also very healthy, as they are rich in vitamins and minerals.
That is why everyone who grows it wants to get a rich harvest. But to achieve this, strawberries need to be looked after not only when they bloom and bear fruit. Post-harvest strawberry care is essential. This is directly related to the laying of future berries, so experienced gardeners pay special attention to strawberries during this period.
Here we have a bush of garden strawberries, what do we do with it? First of all, we remove the props, we no longer need them: the berries are ripe, we have collected them, now it is superfluous. Then we look at the leaves themselves. Many people ask if a complete pruning of strawberry leaves is needed after harvest? I will answer this question as follows: it is needed only if the leaves are affected by diseases, various spots. If there are spots on the bush, that is, there is at least a minimal lesion - it must be cut off. We cut off the leaves that are affected by spots, remove the peduncles and those leaves that we do not like.
It immediately became clear that this bush has a lot of mustache. We will not collect the sockets from it, so we collect all the antennae, and as close to the center of the outlet we remove them, cut them off. The procedure for removing the mustache will have to be repeated several times per season. If we run and do not cut the mustache, then all the forces of the bush will go to the formation of young mustache and flower buds, respectively, the berries will be smaller. Therefore, we cut off everything unnecessary.
As soon as the leaves were cut off, it immediately becomes clear that we have weeds here, so we loosen the strawberries, we could not do this while our berries were forming. We got a neat bush. If the plant is affected by a strawberry mite and another disease, very different spots, it is necessary to remove all the foliage from the bush, even the young one. Then all the leaves are cut off, and the plantation is treated with agents against fungal diseases, against spotting. In this case, we will leave the leaves.
Here is an example of using agrospan to cover land, then less weeds appear. This non-woven material is fixed with pins so that it does not fly away from the wind.
Now the plantation has already been cultivated, the land is loosened, you can cover it with agrospan if you want it, or leave it in this state and carry out periodic loosening and weeding.
Before pruning strawberries for the winter, prepare a garden tool. High-quality inventory will help you quickly complete the processing and cause minimal damage to plants. For pruning strawberries, use a pruning shear with sharp blades. It is convenient to remove old shoots with garden shears. Before and after use, the garden tool is disinfected.
Rules for pruning strawberries in the fall:
At the end of fruiting, strawberries develop numerous whiskers (long leafless shoots), which they scatter in different directions, trying to take root in new areas. If there is no need for seedlings, then the mustache must be removed, since they waste nutrients and can litter the garden. Usually, strawberry mustache trimming is carried out in the summer, immediately after their mass appearance.
After harvesting, it is also advisable to prune the strawberry leaves, up to leaving only bare branches of the plant. However, this advice applies if fruiting ends no later than the end of July.
Although strawberries are a very viable plant with good healing properties, the following rules should be followed whenever possible:
From the point of view of the lunar calendar, the most suitable dates for such work will be the days on which the waxing moon is in Cancer or Virgo. For 2018, these will be:
All of the above related more to the traditional early and mid-early varieties of strawberries, the so-called short daylight hours. Their fruit buds form in early autumn (when the days are short) and they bear fruit only once a season.
The fruiting process of remontant strawberries is completely different. Here, the word remontant means plant varieties that are capable of bearing fruit twice or more during one growing season.
Obviously, this feature changes the very approach to plant pruning.
If the last cycle of fruiting ends closer to the beginning of frost, then there can be no question of complete autumn pruning of leaves - there is simply no time for this. If necessary, only a partial sampling of rotten, damaged or diseased leaves is practiced. The same is true for other seasons (spring and summer), because remontant strawberries do not have a long break in budding.
With regard to trimming the mustache, the approach and requirements for it are the same as for traditional varieties.
Strawberry leaves live for about two months. When wilting, various spots appear on them: faded white, red and even scarlet. These are signs of aging of foliage, the development of various diseases on it.
It is not worth thinking about whether you need to cut strawberries after fruiting, since it is the pruning of strawberry (strawberry) leaves that helps protect future fruits from diseases.
Knowing how the strawberry is processed after harvest is very important. After 3-4 years of growing berries in one place, it is necessary to fertilize the soil with compost, rotten manure, mulch the soil with sawdust and ash. This will help cover the strawberry roots that are visible from the ground. For those who are interested in how to care for strawberries after harvest, it is worth noting that mulching and hilling will ensure good root development.
Applying tips on how to properly process your strawberries after harvest can help keep your plant safe from infections and prepare it for wintering. Keep an eye on the bushes, provide them with proper care and prune them after fruiting, as a result, you will expect a large and bountiful harvest next year.
