Pepper: language of flowers and plants

LANGUAGE AND MEANING OF FLOWERS AND PLANTS

PEPPER

Piper nigrum

(family

Piperaceae

)

Pepper this extraordinary spice in the West has become a symbol of virility and power but also of humiliation. This tradition dates back to the time of the Goths around 400 BC. when Alaric, king of the Visigoths, after having conquered Rome, had gold, silver and even pepper delivered. Later Attila, king of the Huns, did the same thing.

In the Middle Ages it was customary to send it to the lords as a sign of submission.

Nowadays, pepper is now considered in positive terms: a "whole pepper" person refers to the characteristics of pepper and therefore indicates a lively and biting person. A person who is not "neither salt nor pepper" since these two things have a strong and determined taste and characteristics, means to be insignificant.
