How to make a DIY lawn mower

Modern gardening is hard to imagine without a lawn. It doesn't matter how big the grass is - like a golf course or just the size of a desk - the grass needs to be trimmed.

Gardening equipment stores offer a wide range of lawn mowers and trimmers of different quality and price categories - electric and gasoline lawn mowers, self-propelled and mechanical lawn mowers, robots, tractors and other exotic things.

But a real summer resident does everything on his own. In this article we will explain how to make a lawn mower with your own hands from scrap materials.

If you have an old stroller, bicycle or washing machine, you can make a creative and functional do it yourself lawn mower.

The device of a lawn mower is simple:

Frame for DIY lawn mowers can be used from the stroller or welded from the corners.

At this stage, the height of the frame is important - the taller the frame and the larger the diameter of the wheels, the greater the grip of the grass. A mower on a low frame will not cope with tall grass, and small wheels will make it difficult to move the machine. For normal operation, it is enough that the side of the base is 25-50 cm, and the height is 7-10 cm.

If a frame from a finished product is used, it already has a holder, and if the base is homemade, a handle is welded to the frame (you can also use a bolted connection). Ideally, if the handle will be adjustable in height, as in a cultivator.


For DIY lawn mowers you can use a motor from an old washing machine or vacuum cleaner, water pump or electric saw. Engine power depends on the perimeter of the platform, the weight of the blade, and the hardness of the grass. For a platform of 25 x 25 cm, a 250-500 W engine with a speed of 1000 - 1500 is suitable, for a more overall machine it is better to take a kilowatt engine at 2500-3000 rpm.

The engine can be mounted on brackets, but it is better to make a solid platform so that the grass will not fall on it. The structure must be rigid. The engine is installed in the middle of the platform, or better, closer to the front wheelset. The motor shaft is fixed exactly in the center of the chassis. The minimum distance to the ground is 50 mm. The shaft cover can be cut from sheet steel, or you can use a regular tin can.

In order to protect trees, a fence, the curbs of garden paths, the lawn mower is equipped with its own hands with protection - a steel arc, with a radius slightly larger than the stroke of a knife.


Sheet steel is used with a thickness of about 5 mm. Knife width can be 30-45 mm, radius - 250-300 mm. This will be a fairly massive weapon. You can use a two-handed saw blade and cut a three-blade knife. The knife is attached to the motor pulley with a nut connection.

The most crucial moment is knife balancing. After sharpening and fixing the cutting edge on the shaft, the need for balancing is determined by manual scrolling. Part of the metal is gradually removed on one of the blades with a grinder until the blade starts to stop in the horizontal plane.

Electrical part

For convenience, the engine start and stop buttons can be transferred to the handle, and the wire can be fixed around it. All twists of wires must be very carefully insulated; for these purposes, you can buy heat-shrinkable tubes.

DIY educational toys for children

Surely many of you have either seen or at least heard of such a toy as a business board. This is a development board on which various objects are located. With their help, the child can develop fine motor skills. There may be hooks, laces, buttons, and other similar items on the board.

Seeing such a colorful board, everyone, for sure, will rush to acquire it. However, take your time and look at this business board carefully. Surely, most of the items located on it, you will find at home. Then go ahead, get down to business. Take the board, you can leave it rectangular, you can cut out any shape. We paint with paint, you don't have to paint. Then we take different objects and begin to attach them to the board. As a result, you will get your own business board, which will be no worse than the store one.

Another easy-to-use educational toy is a tree with magnetic plugs. Everything is very simple here. You will need plywood, plastic bottle caps and small round magnets, such as those found on souvenirs. Cut a tree out of plywood, paint it. Then we glue the magnets on it. We fix other magnets on the corks. We take plugs of different colors. draw circles around the magnets in the same color as the plugs. The craft is ready.

Its essence lies in the fact that the baby would attach the plugs to the magnets of the color in which they are painted. It is clear that here we are talking about color perception.

Another interesting version of the toy "who eats what." You make figurines of various animals from any available material. You make a base, draw on it what these animals eat.

The point of the game is for the child to correctly distribute the animals and their food. You can make several such play forms according to the types of animals, for example, domestic and wild, dogs and cats, etc.

The next interesting craft is a labyrinth. It is done simply and with a minimum of material. You just need to take the box, ice cream sticks and a ball. From ice cream sticks we make sides on the box - a labyrinth. If there are no sticks, then you can cut out narrow strips from another box, which you can then stick on. First you need to mark the maze itself, and then stick the sides along the markings. After that, holes are cut in different places to fit the size of the ball. In order for the toy to look beautiful, it must be painted.

The task is to roll the ball through the maze so that it does not fall into the holes-holes. Surely, such a toy will appeal not only to very young children, but also to those who are older.

For kids, you can make a pyramid toy. Remember, there was one when rings of different sizes had to be correctly put on the pin. Since everything is made of cardboard, here, in addition to the size, you can make different colors so that the child would correctly string circles of the same color.

There can be a lot of options for such a toy. The main thing is to do so as to captivate the baby.

And here is another interesting option for the development of fine motor skills in a child. We take several plastic bottles, cut off their necks. We fasten the necks to the cardboard base and tighten the lids.

Everything is simple here, the child unscrews and twists the caps on the necks of the bottles. If you have accumulated a lot of traffic jams, then you can make such a snake out of them.

A hole is made in the corks, they are strung on a string, we make the head of the snake. The head can be rolled out of paper and wrapped with tape.

And one more interesting toy, which is more athletic than intellectual. It will require a bottle, which we cut off in the middle. We make a hole in the cork and attach a string. We tie some light toy to the other end of the string. You can do it yourself, for example, a fish or a bee. The child throws the toy up and catches it in the bottle.

The rope is needed so that the toy to be caught does not fly away from the throw.

In general, there are a lot of options for educational toys, the main thing is to work a little with your head and everything will work out. It can be hours for teaching time, and abacus. Even, elementary, they took the sole from old slippers or slates, glued it to a cardboard base, attached laces and let the "small one" sit and tie or untie them, otherwise he does everything together.

If you take the balls from Kinder surprises and put them in a plastic bottle, then you get a homemade rattle.

In general, a lot of interesting toys for babies can be made from plastic bottles.

For example, for bathing in the bathroom, you can make a boat that will make the child's water procedures more attractive.

You can make a small train from several plastic bottles. Maybe it will not be as interesting as the current model of the railway, but it will be an original piece of work.

If you still have old socks, from which your child has already grown, do not rush to throw them away. They washed them and made a stuffed toy out of them.

Different children have different addictions. Boys, for example, like to tinker more with toy cars. If you urgently need something to keep your baby busy, you can quickly make such a machine out of paper.

We take a colored sheet of paper, fold it into a tube, glue it. Then we cut out the wheels, glue them to the cylinder. In the cylinder itself, we cut out places for the cabin and put the little people from the kinder surprise there. We do the craft in a matter of minutes, and you can keep your child occupied with such a toy for a long time.

If your child loves music, not in the sense of a music lover, but he needs to knock musically, hum, then such a set, which is presented in the following figure, will come in handy.

They use dry felt-tip pens that are often thrown away. But here's how you can use them by making a xylophone or harmonica out of them. And from the boxes of kinder surprise we make a tambourine.

As you can see, it is quite simple to keep the kid occupied by making completely uncomplicated toys. And what about the older kids?

It's time to mow the grass, and my farm didn't have a lawn mower. Of course, you can buy ready-made, factory-made. But for those who love tinkering, paying 1-2 thousand or more for the simplest device, which is usually needed several times a year, is an unaffordable luxury, especially since the lawns in garden plots are usually not large.

Lawn mower "Meadow", made of scrap and purchased materials using a minimum set of tools - drill, hammer, screwdriver, pliers, hacksaw for metal. It is desirable to have a vice and an emery machine.

The use of a ready-made chassis from a toy baby carriage, an electric motor from an electric polisher, an old brush from a vacuum cleaner, parts from outdated household video equipment, a piece of plastic tube and a handle from a children's umbrella can reduce labor intensity and manufacturing time.

In the garage, in the "reserves", the Soviet electric polisher EP-3M, with a 220-volt, 450-watt collector motor, has long been gathering dust.

The engine has a design similar to vacuum cleaner engines - the engine has a thread on the shaft, a cooling impeller and a sleeve with an internal thread that fixes it.
As a chassis, I used a "running gear" from a children's toy stroller, and as a control handle, I used a plastic handle from a faulty children's umbrella.

Rotate the umbrella tube out of the handle with pliers or a vice. We join the handle with a piece of polypropylene water pipe approximately 120-140 cm long. To do this, we grind the handle onto a gentle cone, leaving a little more than the inner diameter of the pipe. We heat the pipe from the inside with a soldering iron, removing, also on the cone, the inner layer of plastic. When the heating becomes sufficient, we connect the parts. A joint 25-30 mm wide is fixed with a self-tapping screw with a wide head.

We insert the polypropylene tube into the brush from the vacuum cleaner, but due to the significant difference in diameters, we use an adapter sleeve, for example, a rubber sleeve from the car's units (you may have to adjust its inner and outer diameter, which I advise you to make a little conical for ease of assembly), also fixing it with a self-tapping screw.

First, we put the sleeve with an interference fit on the pipe, then we finally adjust it to the inner diameter of the brush.

We use a brush that has 2 degrees of freedom: tilt and rotation, for example this:

This allows for improved control of the lawnmower - closer "drive up" to curbs and fences. The brush is attached to the chassis in any convenient way, I removed the lower part, made cuts in the upper part for the chassis wire, then installed the lower part of the brush (pad) back. It turned out to be a fairly rigid and reliable connection. Someone will find it more convenient to connect to the dashboard - here you implement your design vision for the solution. Lubricate the rotating brush assemblies with grease.
Thus, the control handle is dielectric, and in the event of a breakdown of the motor insulation, the operator will not be affected by the electric current.
To increase the resource of the chassis, remove the wheels, drill holes in them under the axles, make bushings from pieces of a small tube. An aluminum tube from the evaporator of a domestic refrigerator came up.

On the chassis we attach a flap made of thin sheet metal (the lower part of the video player body), as well as an electric motor on brackets made of metal strips 3-4 mm thick.

The shield prevents pebbles and grass from flying out, but it is advisable to wear safety glasses and closed shoes when mowing.

The impeller of the fan, similar to the impeller of the section from the suction unit of the vacuum cleaner, is installed above the flap, so that air is sucked into the electric motor from above, and is thrown out by the impeller from below, contributing to good cooling.
We make a hole in the shield for the motor shaft, I just punched it with a few blows of a screwdriver. The hole turned out with rough edges and asymmetrical, as it turned out later, this solution contributes to the self-cleaning of the shaft from the wound grass.
At high rotational speeds of the engine shaft, the use of solid metal knives can be dangerous - it is unlikely that an amateur master has the opportunity to choose the required metal, and the use of an unknown one can lead to serious injury. Therefore, we equip the lawn mower with a cutting unit with a line.
I will write specifically about the fishing line attachment point (working body).
Several options have been tried. Whoever has the option of purchasing a ready-made assembly from a factory trimmer, with a coil, is probably the best way out.
I didn't have such an opportunity. The possibility of using was tested: lids from a jar of baby food, a plastic lid for canning from a glass jar (the method was found on the Internet, and according to the author's reviews, it showed an excellent result), two washers, between which it was clamped with a diameter of 1.8 mm, and others.
The line either broke off, or wound on the shaft, or cut through the walls of the attachment point in just a matter of minutes.
Therefore, it was decided to make a metal assembly. The choice fell on a part from an old, disassembled video player - a rotating part of a block of video heads - in the photo it is a shiny part with circular lines.

The center hole is bored to the diameter of the existing screw that is attached to the motor shaft or adapter sleeve. I have it 8 mm.

After testing with 1.8 mm green line, which showed insufficient "vitality" and was also weak for cutting tough grass, a 4 mm red line was installed.
The fishing line, in one piece, is simply passed through the holes Ф4 (the size is indicated for reference, the drilling is performed in such a way that the fishing line enters with the maximum possible friction).The edges of the hole must be rounded as much as possible, since the line will be cut at this point, to get a "role model" look at how this is done on factory trimmers and lawn mowers.

The part allows you to make several drills - for different fishing lines. The rigidity of the line is such that it does not require additional fastening. Smaller lines may need to be tied in knots. Choose the length of the line so that it cannot reach the wheels of the chassis - plastic rims and rubber tires can be damaged.

On the handle, in a convenient place, it is necessary to attach a box with a power switch; it was decided not to exclude noise and spark suppression elements from the circuit and leave them on the standard bracket, on the engine. The engine should be covered with a protective hood with ventilation mesh, although not much debris is sucked into the engine. Tape the cable to the handle with insulating tape in several places.

The tests revealed both the positive qualities of the lawn mower - the absence of engine overheating, quite good work on hard grass (chicory, growth of raspberries, cherries, currants), low weight and the ability to maneuver, a handle that is convenient for hanging on a hook, pipe or tree branch, and disadvantages - satisfactory work on continuous shallow and soft (like a blanket) grass, which the mower knocks into something like felt, a very short cut - 3 - 4 cm, which may be unacceptable from the point of view of the aesthetic appearance of the lawn, insufficient permeability of the chassis due to the small diameter of the wheels , non-folding handle, which can make transport and storage difficult. Although the unit fits into the salon of the VAZ classics.
After an hour of use, the fishing line on one side nevertheless broke off, "under the very spine" - i.e. at the very beginning of the transition of drilling from a cylinder to a cone, and thinned out at the ends (there are stones and stone curbs on the site, perhaps this was the reason for the refusal). The photo clearly shows the trace of the fishing line on the working body, and in both directions from the point of departure from the working body, as well as the absence of a large amount of grass wound on the shaft.

All the grass was cut by that time. I consider the result acceptable, and the lawn mower, named "Meadow" by the author, has taken its rightful place among garden assistants.

I advise my followers to take a closer look at the more common and affordable collector motors of vacuum cleaners (the hostess regretted the old vacuum cleaner for uncompleting), juicers, blenders, food processors, domestic and imported, and a little larger baby strollers - walking, with a larger diameter of wheels and a more rigid chassis. It is better to make the handle foldable and from a stiffer pipe.

General recommendations

When creating homemade knives that are installed in grain crushers, it is recommended to use only metal with a high level of strength. At a minimum, such a metal should not be inferior in its characteristics to St-3 steel.

In the process of constant operation of the grain crusher, the knives will gradually become dull, and the quality of crushing will no longer satisfy. You can fix the situation simply by sharpening the knives again. This procedure is not complicated.

However, some craftsmen can still make a mistake when creating a unit, fixing the knives "tightly". Such a mistake will not allow you to remove the knives in order to sharpen them or replace them if they completely exhaust their resource.

For this reason, it is highly recommended that the knives be secured so that they are securely in place, but can still be removed if necessary.

Such a structural element as a sieve must also be removable. This will allow it to be periodically removed and thoroughly cleaned.

You should always remember about safety during the operation of a homemade unit. Leaving the operating mechanism unattended is not allowed.

You can make such a grain crusher, as in the video, with your own hands at home, using the proposed instructions and drawings. The home-made unit in functionality will be similar to that purchased in the store.
